WHAT IS EMDR?
EMDR can be utilized as a specific tool to target traumatic memories and the negative beliefs and disturbing emotional states which result from painful lived experiences. I typically utilize EMDR as a complementary part of therapy to reprocess a specific painful experience or to help shift an emotion or cognition that is particularly intrusive. EMDR can also be used a treatment modality in and of itself.
EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy is:
--a comprehensive client centered psychotherapy approach that activates the client's own healing mechanism which stimulates an innate information processing system in the brain
--extensively researched and shown effective in the treatment of symptoms related to trauma, anxiety, and depression
--incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches, such as: psychodynamics, cognitive, cognitive behavioral, experiential, dialectical behavioral, and somatic therapies
--addresses issues of past emotional pain, present day triggers, and future anticipatory triggers
--structured differently than traditional "talk therapy" and utilizes bilateral stimulation during the reprocessing of events, emotions, and beliefs
EMDR procedures facilitate the effective reprocessing of traumatic events or adverse life experiences and their associated beliefs, to an adaptive resolution. Specific procedural steps are used to access and reprocess information while incorporating alternating bilateral stimulation. Originally bilateral stimulation was achieved through use of eye movements; however, currently EMDR therapy often uses audio and tactile bilateral stimulation during the reprocessing phase. This is typically more comfortable for the client. I have both audio and tactile bilateral stimulation available for use in my office, and clients may choose whichever feels more comfortable for them.
In addition to use with traditional 50 minute psychotherapy with insurance payment, I also offer 90-120 minute private pay extended EMDR sessions to clients who would like to use this form of therapy to target working through a specific event, disturbing emotional response, or persistent negative belief.
Extended EMDR sessions are $225 for a 90-120 minute session.
